Things to do in January

  

  1. Time to start geraniums, petunias and impatiens indoors from seed.

  2. Dormant spraying can be done when temperature is above 40°F.   It should be done before new growth shows.

  3. Begin bringing in bulbs that were potted last fall such as tulips, hyacinths and narcissi.  Start them in a 60°-65°F temperature.  Make sure roots are well developed.

  4. Pruning deciduous shrubs, fruit trees, flowering shrubs, and grapes is timely.  Leave roses until later in spring.

     

Things to do in February

 

  1. Spray for peach leaf curl.

  2. Prune fruit trees.

  3. Plant trees as soon as soil can be worked.

  4. Seeds of hardy annuals, such as garden peas and sweet peas, should be sown outdoors.

  5. Indoors, seeds of perennials or tender annuals should be started and later planted outdoors.

  6. Gloxinia or tuberous begonias should be started indoors for later use (inside or outside) after the danger of frost is over. 

 

Things to do in March

 

  • When the weather permits: 

  • Apply crabgrass control just as the forsythia begin to bloom.

  • Apply pre-emergent weed control and soil sterilizers.

  • Dormant spray fruit and nut trees before the buds show color.

  • Start indoors tomato, pepper, geranium seeds.

  • Start cold crops (broccoli, cabbage, kale, etc.) indoors.

  • Plant lettuce, radish, pea seeds in outdoors when soil is workable.

  • Plan garden areas and landscaping.

Things to do in April

 

  • Excellent general planting time.

  • Plant hardy perennials.

  • Sow seeds of hardy annuals.

  • Plant gladiolus and dahlias.

  • Plant potatoes, root artichokes, onions, and root crops.

Things to do in May

 

  • May is the end of the spring planting season for many woody plants.

  • Make sure they are well mulched, well watered, and not allowed to dry out.

  • Planting of gladiola and dahlias continues.

  • Set the stakes as the dahlias are planted so there will be no damage to the roots later.

  • Seeds of perennials and biennials are sown.

  • Sow pansy seed for fall and early winter bloom.

  • Spring flowering bulbs are still in need of their foliage.  Do not remove until yellow.

  • Time to plant most annual flowers in the north.

  • Summer vegetables may be seeded or set out as plants in the second half of this month.
