About Watering Lawns

As a general rule, most lawns require about one inch of water per week from rain or sprinkling. But many people ask, "How long should I water to equal one inch?" Well, it depends on your water pressure and the type of sprinkler you choose.

A few tips to keep in mind:

· It's best to water early in the day. You won't waste water through evaporation, and watering at night puts your lawn at risk for developing mildew and fungus disease.

· Don't give your lawn a light sprinkling. This promotes shallow roots, and it may not even reach the soil, depending on how much you water.

· During dry spells or droughts, pay attention to watering restrictions.

· Water deeply and infrequently (1/2" twice a week is enough) and don't waste water.

Preparing a new lawn

Northwest Seed lawn packages are available in a wide selection of grass varieties and blends with prices starting a 2¢ per sq. ft. based on a 5000 sq. ft. lawn.  This includes 25# of premium lawn seed, 25# of Northwest Lawn Starter fertilizer 12-24-12, 250# of mulch, and the free use of a roller and spreader as well as all the expert advise you need.

Whether using seed or sod, always begin by thoroughly preparing the soil.   For best results, incorporate 2-3 inches of compost or other organic matter into the soil.  Till to a depth of 6-8 inches.  Level the area with a rake and roll.

  1. Set the spreader at #7 and go over the area both directions with the grass seed.

  2. Change the spreader to #5 setting and apply the fertilizer one direction.

  3. Rake the area lightly.

  4. Apply the mulch at 50# per 1000 sq. ft.

  5. Water, letting the mulch pellets swell, then wait until the surface dries.

  6. Fill the roller 1/3 full of water and pull it (don't push) over the area to press the seed into the soil.

  7. Keep the newly planted area moist for 3 weeks.  Do not allow it to dry out, and be sure there is no standing water.

  8. Mow the new grass as soon as possible.

  9. Do not use any weed control until at least the third mowing.

  10. Wait 6-8 weeks (or until growth begins to slow) before reapplying fertilizer.   We recommend a well balanced fertilizer such as Northwest Lawn Starter to encourage root growth.

Twelve Tips for a Better Lawn

IMPROVE THE SOIL

1.)  Don't apply lime (unless your soil tests acidic)

  • In areas with heavy rainfall, minerals tend to be leached out of the soil.  If you live in one of these areas then you would want to lime your lawn once a year.

  • When:  September - October.

  • With what:  Lilly/Miller® Soil Sweet (dolomite lime with magnesium, 40 lbs. covers 1,000 sq. ft.) or Super Sweet (granular lime, 25 lbs. covers 2,000 sq. ft.)

  • Why:  Sweetens acidic soil; gets the full value out of your fertilizer investment;  helps prevent moss invasion; improves water drainage through clay soil.
